Saturday, October 11, 2008 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM (ET)
As part of the Pittsburgh Regional Youth Heritage Festival, YPA will offer a tour of African American historic resources in the City of Pittsburgh.
Join historian John Brewer as he takes you on a trip through more than 200 years of black history in the Pittsburgh region. It highlights the accomplishments of numerous black Pittsburghers who went on to national and international acclaim.
The tour will cover a number of themes important to the development of Pittsburgh's African American community, such as the underground railroad, sports and entertainment, education, and the professional institutions that African Americans built in Pittsburgh.
The tour will cover Pittsburgh's historically black neighborhoods of the Hill District and Homewood, as well as sites located in Downtown, the North Side, and Highland Park, among other places. It will be a tour to remember and inspire discussion about the future of preserving these important historic landmarks.
The tour will start at 9:00 a.m. at the Heinz History Center and end at noon on Oct. 11th at the same location.
The African American History Tour is presented by Carnegie Mellon University's Center for Africanamerican Urban Studies and the Economy (CAUSE).
YPA inspires young people to create change in their communities through historic preservation. YPA provides events, tours, research, training, technical assistance, and special projects that encourage the next generation to take a leadership role in preserving their communities.
Headquartered in historic Homestead at the Moose Building, YPA operates in the nine-county southwestern Pennsylvania region that includes the following counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Washington, and Westmoreland.
